The Best Ways to Get Around Grays Without a Car

Grays Town Centre is well served by trains and buses, but for door-to-door convenience at any hour, a local taxi remains the smartest choice. Here's our guide to getting around Grays efficiently and affordably — whether you have a car or not.

By Train

Grays station sits on the c2c line and is one of the better-connected stations in Thurrock. Direct services run into London Fenchurch Street in around 35–40 minutes during off-peak, making it the quickest option for central London journeys. Trains run frequently throughout the day and into the late evening.

The key limitation is that you need to get to or from the station. If you live close to Grays town centre, that's a short walk. If you're in Chafford Hundred, Stifford Clays, or further out in Thurrock, the last mile to the station is where a taxi or minicab becomes essential — particularly late at night or early in the morning.

By Bus

Grays is served by several Arriva and First bus routes connecting the town centre to Tilbury, Lakeside, Purfleet, Chadwell St Mary, and further afield to Basildon and Brentwood. Key routes to know:

  • Route 44: Grays to Lakeside and Thurrock Shopping Centre — useful for retail and leisure
  • Route 100: Grays to Tilbury via Chadwell St Mary
  • Route 374: Grays to Basildon via Corringham — for cross-Thurrock journeys

Bus services are reliable during core daytime hours but thin out significantly after 8pm. If you need to get somewhere after the last bus, a local taxi is your only practical option.

By Taxi or Private Hire

For door-to-door journeys at any time of day or night, a licensed taxi or private hire vehicle is the most flexible and often most cost-effective option — particularly for:

  • →Evening and late-night travel: After 10pm, public transport options from Grays become very limited. A pre-booked taxi ensures you get home safely regardless of the time.
  • →Hospital and medical appointments: Getting to and from Basildon Hospital, Orsett Hospital, or Southend Hospital is cumbersome by public transport. A taxi gets you there and waits if needed.
  • →Shopping trips: Carrying heavy bags from Lakeside or Lakeside Retail Park on public transport isn't ideal. A taxi to and from the shopping centre costs less than you might expect.
  • →Airport transfers: From Grays, you can reach Heathrow, Stansted, Gatwick, Luton, and City Airport. A pre-booked fixed-price taxi takes all the uncertainty out of the journey.

Walking and Cycling

Grays town centre is compact and walkable. The High Street, Grays Shopping Centre (Thameside), Grays station, and the waterfront area are all within 10 to 15 minutes on foot. The Thames riverside path offers a pleasant route from the town centre towards Tilbury and is well-maintained.

For cycling, Thurrock Council has been investing in cycle routes, and the National Cycle Network Route 13 passes through the area. That said, road conditions on some routes — particularly the A126 and industrial estate roads — can be challenging. For longer journeys, a bike isn't always practical.
